When building the drum room, we were very concerned that the noise would impact the local homes as well as other businesses in the center. With that in mind, we have done our absolute best to try and limit any sound that gets out.
We started with a timber frame for the room and then built a second wall around that. We added two layers of acoustic plaster bored to each wall, filling them with acoustic, dense sound insulation.
We then built a frame for the floor and filled the floor with acoustic insulation. This was to try and stop the sound from traveling through the floor. We were unhappy with the result, so we covered the floor with over 300 tennis balls. (sounds very strange) We then placed another flooring level on top of these tennis balls. These tennis balls acted as a barrier to the sound so that the balls absorbed any vibrations and then did not transfer out of the room.
We super-insulated all the external walls, this was again to stop sound from leaving the room. Upon testing, we found that sound was escaping through the ceiling, so we built a second ceiling that was super-insulated again. This has greatly impacted any sound leaving the room, and we are pretty happy with the results.
In the winter, we always keep the window closed, so sound should not be an issue for you and your home. The summer, however, is a problem. With all the insulation in the room, it gets very, very hot. On a day when it is 22 degrees outside, the drum room goes into the 30s, and we get very hot days even higher.
The only way around it was to get a portable Air Con unit that ventilates out of the window. This then means when we are drumming, sound can escape. We will always keep the window closed whenever we can to stop any noise from reaching you, but sometimes it is just too hot, and we need to open the window to get some cool air into the room.
