Wirral Music Factory is now delighted to offer Wirral Flute lessons to students from beginners to advanced.
Who Are Flute Lessons Suitable For?
The Wirral Flute lessons are suitable for adults and children. Most children can start around 8 or 9, once their hands are big enough to reach the keys and their adult front teeth are in. Younger kids (5–7) can begin on a curved-head flute, which brings the keys closer to the body. There’s no upper age limit — plenty of our adult learners pick it up in their 40s, 50s, and beyond.
Is the flute hard to learn?
Getting a first proper note can take a few lessons — the flute is one of the few instruments where you make the sound entirely with your lips (your embouchure), not a reed or mouthpiece. Once that clicks, progress is usually quick. Most beginners are playing simple tunes within their first month.
What Will I Learn in Wirral Flute Lessons?
The Wirral Flute lessons will be organised around the individual needs of the students, finding out what music they want to play, what they want to sound like, and where they want to take their music. The ultimate goal of the lessons will be for the students to find their own sound and individual voice on the instrument. The Wirral Flute lessons will be organised into 4 areas: tone production, technique, the learning of pieces, and improvisation. The student will also learn to read music and about basic music theory. With improvisation, the student will learn about harmony (chords and scale usage) and the different styles of improvisation used in Jazz, Latin, and Free Playing.
About the Flute
The flute is one of the oldest and most popular instruments used today. It has an incredibly beautiful and expressive sound and is a very versatile instrument. It can play many different styles of music from Classical to Jazz, Latin, folk music, and even Rock and Pop.
Can I learn Flute Grades?
Yes, you can take grades. There are two types you can take — Associated Board or Trinity Jazz grades, both from grade 1 to grade 8.
Do I Need My Own Flute?
Yes! Because of hygiene, we recommend students have their own flute to use during their lessons. Many people start with a rental or a good entry-level model around £150–£300. Avoid the very cheapest flutes online; they often play badly and put learners off. Your tutor will recommend specific models.
How much should I practise?
For beginners, 10–15 minutes a day, five days a week, beats one long session on the weekend. As you progress, that builds naturally to 20–30 minutes. Little and often is the rule. Like with any instrument, you get out what you put in.
Where Are the Wirral Flute Lessons Held?
All of our Wirral Flute lessons are held at Wirral Music Factory.
Can I still play the flute if I wear braces?
Yes — it takes a bit of adjustment because braces change how your lips sit, but it’s very doable. Most learners with braces just need a few sessions to find a comfortable embouchure, and your tutor will help you through it.
