Who Are Wirral Mandolin Lessons For?

The mandolin has a beautiful, distinctive sound and a rich repertoire across folk, bluegrass, Celtic, Italian classical and modern indie music. Our mandolin lessons suit:

  • Folk and traditional music enthusiasts who want to bring a melodic stringed instrument into sessions
  • Existing guitarists or violinists — mandolin is tuned in fifths like a violin, but played with a pick like a guitar, so skills transfer in interesting ways
  • Adult beginners looking for something distinctive and rewarding to learn
  • Performers who want to add mandolin to their toolkit for studio work or live shows

What Will I Learn in the Mandolin Lessons?

Mandolin lessons at WMF are shaped around what you want to play. Common areas students work on:

  • Plectrum technique — alternate picking, tremolo, cross-picking
  • Reading melodies in standard notation and tab
  • Major and minor scales, mandolin chord shapes
  • Folk and bluegrass tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes)
  • Italian classical mandolin repertoire
  • Modern indie-folk accompaniment and song arrangement

Your mandolin tutor at WMF is Chris, a multi-instrumentalist with First Class Hons in Popular Music and a love of folk, traditional and modern stringed instruments.

Do I Need My Own Mandolin?

Yes — please bring your own mandolin to each lesson. Mandolins are a more specialist instrument than ukuleles or guitars, so we do not have studio mandolins available to borrow. If you are shopping for your first mandolin, ask us before your first lesson — we can recommend a decent A-style or F-style starter mandolin in the £100–£200 range.
