About Wirral Music Factory
Wirral Music Factory is a music school in the heart of Birkenhead, built on a simple belief: there’s no single “right” way to learn music. Everyone learns differently, everyone hears things differently, and the best teaching meets you where you are — not the other way round.
We’re a relaxed, friendly place to learn, with a genuinely high standard of teaching behind it. Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the very first time, working towards grades, or you’re already gigging and want to sharpen up, you’ll find a tutor here who gets you and helps you find your own voice.

How it started
Founder Matt Duffy started Wirral Music Factory in 2011, after finishing his degree in London and moving back home to the Wirral. When he got back, he couldn’t find the kind of place he was looking for. There were good music schools around, but they were quite formal and quite structured — and while that suits some people, there was nothing for the more modern player, or for the musician who doesn’t fit the traditional mould.
Matt wanted somewhere more relaxed, but with no drop in the quality of teaching. Somewhere, people could express themselves and focus on what they wanted to play, rather than being pushed through one rigid style. A place that fits the student, instead of asking the student to fit the place.
A lot of that comes from his own journey into music. Matt’s dad was a bass player — semi-professional, with a proper job on the side — and it was his relaxed, encouraging attitude that got Matt into music in the first place. Later, at music college in Liverpool, Matt was taught by a brilliant jazz drummer, Dave Joseph, who completely changed how he saw things. Dave showed him how to break things down, how to learn faster, and — most importantly — that making mistakes is part of it. He made Matt feel that it’s okay to be a learner. That set him free, and it’s the feeling the whole school is built around.
What makes us different
We understand that there’s never one way to get somewhere. There are always several roads to the same place, and everyone travels them differently. That belief runs through everything we do.
Our lessons are student-led. You call the shots on what you want to learn — and if you’re not sure yet, that’s fine, we’ll help you find it. We take the passion and the skills you already have and help you develop them, so you come away sounding like you, not a copy of someone else.
And it’s a genuinely supportive place. You can come in and make mistakes all the way through a lesson, and nobody will bat an eyelid — you’ll get nothing but encouragement. That relaxed, nurturing feel, from both the staff and the students, is the thing we’re proudest of.
Who it’s for
Wirral Music Factory is for everyone — all ages, all abilities. We’re especially good with nervous first-timers and anyone who’s worried about making a fool of themselves. If you just want a foundation to build on, we’ll give you one, and often the confidence that comes with it spills over into the rest of life, too.
Some of our students come purely for the fun of it. Others are working towards grades or heading down a more formal route. And plenty are already musicians who come to us to work on specific things. Whatever you’re after, there’s a skill set here to match it.
Nothing beats seeing a student who started out nervous slowly build their confidence and understanding, then go on to perform live, join a band, or move on to music college — and seeing the sense of achievement that brings them. That’s the whole reason we do this.
Our tutors
Our tutors are professional, working musicians, active on the music scene, so they bring real, current experience into every lesson. But being a great player is only half of it. What matters just as much to us is personality: every one of our tutors is calm, encouraging, friendly and completely without ego. There’s no showing off here — just people who genuinely want you to leave in a better place than you arrived.
Between them, our tutors teach drums, piano, guitar, bass, singing, violin, saxophone, flute, ukulele, mandolin, and music theory — from complete beginner to advanced. Every tutor is fully DBS-checked.
How we teach
All of our lessons are 1-to-1 and shaped entirely around you. There’s no fixed, one-size-fits-all curriculum. Want to learn your favourite songs? Work towards a grade? Just figure out where to start? Your tutor will build the lessons around your goals. We prepare students for ABRSM, Trinity and Rockschool grades when they want to, and we’re every bit as happy helping someone play just for the love of it.

You’ll find us in our professional teaching studios in central Birkenhead. There’s free parking, and we’re easy to reach by public transport. Parents and carers are always welcome to sit in on lessons.
